One Health Framework

Prioritizing the Well-Being of People and Planet

One Health is a holistic approach to human well-being that recognizes the interconnection and interdependence of people, animals and wildlife, ecosystems, and their shared environment. Recognized by global institutions, it emphasizes collaboration across sectors to address human health challenges through integrated solutions across public health, education, food, medical, and environmental systems.

Building a New Model for Human Health

Project One Health takes the One Health framework a step further by focusing on the connection between human well-being and nature and re-establishing this vital connection among young people. Studies identify age 16 as a key milestone and an early predictor of future health. Improving the physical, mental and developmental health of people younger than 16 is critical in helping them flourish over the course of their lifetime.

Creating a Virtuous Cycle

Many young people lack an understanding of their role in taking care of the planet and don’t feel empowered to positively impact the environment's health. Reconnecting them with the natural world can inspire them to see themselves as vital contributors to its well-being. By fostering an appreciation for the environment and showing them how their actions, big or small, can make a difference, we can help young people build confidence in their ability to create a healthier, more sustainable future—for themselves and the planet.

Human Health

Human health thrives when we reconnect with nature. Time outdoors reduces stress, boosts well-being, and fosters growth—mentally, physically, and socially. It also strengthens our ties to each other and to sustainable food systems, promoting healthier lifestyles. Project One Health works to build stronger connections to nature and to others by getting kids and families outside and engaged in outdoor activities. By embracing nature, we create stronger communities and a more balanced, resilient world.

Animal and Wildlife Health

Healthy wildlife and farm animals are vital to sustaining clean air, water, and fertile soil. They maintain ecological balance, support biodiversity, and strengthen ecosystems. Ethical care for farm animals also enriches soil through natural grazing and nutrient cycles, playing a key role in sustainable food systems. Project One Health aims to redefine children’s relationship with the environment and food systems through place-based learning and hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and wonder.

Environmental Health

A healthy environment is the foundation of all life. Clean air, water, and soil sustain humans, animals, plants, and agriculture. Pollution, habitat loss, and industrial food systems disrupt these essentials. Project One Health supports the protection of green space, forests, rivers, and wildlife in and around the communities where we are working. Moreover, our work cultivates an appreciation for the environment among children and adolescents, so they see themselves as vital contributors to its well-being.

The Importance of Human Connection

Studies show positive relationships with others play an important role in our personal health, longevity, happiness, and more. Strong community connections support a sense of belonging, meaning, well-being, and purpose.* Project One Health connects children to the therapeutic benefits of nature through an intentional model that also strengthens human and community connection.
